We are currently caring for 10 puppies who had nowhere else to go.

We recently received a special delivery of 10 puppies, who were flown by private plane from Georgia to Central Florida after a foster could not be found for them in the area where they were born. 正澳门六合彩开奖结果 staff members were stationed and ready to receive the pups right on the tarmac!

Since the puppies had lived outside for their entire 4 weeks of life with no medical care, they were immediately brought to our veterinary team for a check-up. Aside from some easily treatable parasites that are found in many young cats and dogs who come from the great outdoors, these little ones were in great health. With that, the seven girls and three boys, who were all given names of bird species, were sent into foster care to learn and grow until they’re ready for adoption.  

We’re grateful to be able to help this hefty litter mature in a safe environment, but their arrival means that we now have just under 100 animals currently in foster care who need resources like nourishing meals and medical care.

Our 2023 in review has arrived! Check out what our organization was able to accomplish between January 1 – December 31 of last year:
  • 听4,228 cats and dogs found their new families between our two shelter locations and offsite partners.
  • Our foster volunteers contributed 67,156 hours caring for 1,494 animals, mostly kittens and puppies.
  • Volunteers committed 80,033 hours between the shelter, clinics, events, fostering, and beyond.
  • Our Public Clinic saw 18,756 pets. They also gave 29,045 vaccines and performed 5,474 spay/neuter surgeries.
  • 678 pets were transferred from other shelters that did not have the time, space, or resources to care for them.
  • 3,813 cats were trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated and returned to their outdoor homes by our Community Cat Initiative.

In honor of this year’s #GivingTuesday, we’d like to share a story about a courageous French bulldog puppy and the team of 正澳门六合彩开奖结果 staff
working relentlessly to give her the best life possible.

Rita was surrendered to us when she was around 8 weeks old. Her previous owner had acquired her from a breeder and knew something wasn’t quite right with her appearance.听

Our veterinary staff determined that baby Rita was born with all four of her legs malformed. They were very concerned about her longterm mobility and ability to support her weight as she aged, especially since she was already having difficulty walking. They would also come to find that she was suffering from “short-nosed syndrome,” a common issue with breeds like French Bulldogs that can cause breathing problems and other health complications.听

Before our veterinary staff could safely address her ailments, Rita needed to grow up a little first. Our Sanford shelter manager, Michelle, stepped up to foster her. From the start, Rita’s charismatic and often goofy personality made it hard to believe she was dealing with so much.听

When Rita was around 8 months old, she was finally big enough to begin her journey of healing. Our veterinarian, Dr. Martin, was able to surgically correct the damage from her “short-nosed syndrome” by using our state of the art VetScalpel laser surgery machine. We are so proud to say Rita was in the best of hands, as Dr. Martin is a Fellow with the American Laser Study Club and has extensive experience performing these types of minimally invasive procedures.听

While our veterinarians are truly miracle workers, cases sometimes arise that require us to seek help from outside agencies. Rita was in need of a specialist to correct her legs, so we turned to the amazing UF Small Animal Hospital.

Their expert staff wasted no time getting Rita on the right track. It was determined that she would need special plates to help stabilize her legs. They even made a fascinating 3D printed model of one of the affected limbs to illustrate how the procedure would work!听

In October, Rita had her first surgery and is recovering wonderfully. Once healed, she will require the same procedure on her other front leg. Though her back legs are also malformed, they are currently not causing complications but may require additional surgeries in the future. No matter how Rita’s condition continues to progress, we will be right here for her because of you.

2023 marks the 5th anniversary of our Trap Neuter Vaccinate Return (TNVR) program, also known as our听Community Cat Initiative. Since 2018, we’ve been able to help 15,000 community cats in the Greater Orlando area!听

Every Friday, our Alafaya clinic provides spay/neuter and vaccination services for up to 40 cats. Our Downtown Orlando shelter is also able to assist, providing services for up to 25 cats a week. They are also equipped to care for cats who come in needing further medical assistance.听
听
It takes a village of passionate individuals to make all of this possible and we are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with our wonderful trapping volunteers, along with our partners from Orange County Animal Services, CARE Feline TNR, Catapalooza, Spay & Neuter Nation, and Franklin’s Friends.听We are also excited to share that Franklin’s Friends has donated $25,000 towards the care of cats who come through the program with more advanced medical needs!

As we work tirelessly to decrease the number of kittens born outdoors, we are so thankful to have these wonderful partners at our side.

Being a foster volunteer for 正澳门六合彩开奖结果 is a great way to help a dog or cat that is in need of some extra time and love before it can be adopted.

We talk a lot about our kitten foster program, but volunteers also foster some of our puppies and medically sensitive dogs. One longtime dog foster, Megan Oates, shared some of her experiences with us and has some words of encouragement for anyone considering becoming a foster.

How long have you been fostering dogs for 正澳门六合彩开奖结果 and how many dogs have you fostered?

Megan: I have been volunteering and fostering听for 正澳门六合彩开奖结果 for 11 years. I mainly听foster dogs and puppies. I take on听medical cases, behavioral cases, and lots听of puppies. I don鈥檛 really keep count, but I know I have fostered over听100 dogs for 正澳门六合彩开奖结果. When you foster litters of puppies, or听kittens, the numbers can add up quickly.

What do you enjoy about fostering dogs?

Megan: I love being a part of their journey to听finding a home. Some just need a space听to continue to grow and learn the ropes听until they are old enough to find a home.听Others really need support and TLC to help them heal physically听or emotionally to be ready to meet a family. I enjoy being that听helping hand or quiet space to recuperate when needed. I don鈥檛听have the financial means to donate to the shelter as much as I would听like. Opening my home to the animals in need helps me to play an听important part in the mission of the organization.

Is there one particular dog or foster experience that sticks out to you?

Tucker, my first 鈥渟tinky鈥 puppy. He came to the shelter as a 6鈥8-week-old puppy with a horrible case of demodex mange. He had basically no hair and his body was covered in scabs. He looked more like a piglet than a puppy. I was out of town when he came and the staff sent me a picture of him knowing I鈥檓 a sucker for the needy ones. I picked him up two days later and fell in love instantly.

When the animals have mange, they stink, their skin is bloody, and it听flakes off everywhere! But they don鈥檛 realize听that they are disgusting and want love and听cuddles like any other animal. Tucker taught听me to look past the exterior and see him for the loving听boy he was. I spent the next three months loving on that听boy like he deserved, and we got him healed and ready for听adoption. Watching him evolve was so awesome. We听had no idea what he would look听like as he healed, and his hair听started growing it was like a听puzzle being put together.

I have听fostered at least 40 dogs with听skin issues, and it is all because of听Tucker teaching me that 鈥渟tinky鈥澨齪uppies need love too! The听treatment has evolved, and it is much less work
for me. Their healing time is speedier, but the joy of their听transformation never goes away.

What would you say to someone who is interested in fostering, but needs a little encouragement to make the decision?

Just go for it! It鈥檚 hard to let them go sometimes and you will probably cry. I bawled like a baby when Tucker was adopted. He was my first long-term, in-depth medical foster and it was difficult to say farewell. His family still sends me pictures occasionally even though he was adopted 10 years ago. The reward for helping each foster that comes through your home is more than I can describe.

People often say, 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 do that.鈥 My听response is often, if not you, then who? If you fall in love听and decide to keep a foster pet, then it is still a successful听foster experience. I don鈥檛 call it a foster failure since the听point is to find loving homes for the shelter pets and that听is just what happened.
